Plague Rat – Chapter 1, Page 14

Description

Panel One: A black frame with word balloons fading into view. They say, "Poor kid." "I think he's it." "Are you sure? There's a lot of houses." "Yeah. We checked every door. There's no one left. He's the last." "Anyway, how's he doing?" "He should be all right, but Blanche still needs to run more tests."

Panel Two: Cal's POV. It's dark, but things are starting to come into view. The talking continues. "I've never seen such a reaction, have you?" "No. There's something more here."

Panel Three: Things are getting lighter. "What do you think it is?" "I dunno, but we'll get his medical history soon enough."

Panel Four: A ceiling comes into focus. "Oh, we took care of his family, and we found this." "This is incredible! Blanche, take -"

Panel Five: A closeup of Cal. His head is on a pillow and he has a folded washcloth on his forehead. His head moves slightly and his brow furrows. "Shh! Guys, he's waking up!"

Panel Six: Cal sits up, blinking, with his hand on his head. He's in a bed in a room with dark wooden walls. Instead of the long-sleeved shirt he was wearing, he now has on an oversized short-sleeved shirt covered in a fish pattern.*

Author Note

Time to slow down the action a bit for some proper exposition. It's world-building time!

I actually had a lot of fun with this one. It was fast and easy to draw, but it took a while for me to get just the right effect I was going for. I looked at a lot of comics where characters were waking up, and I ultimately went with a mix of things that closely mirror what I see when I come out of a deep sleep.

If you've joined me on Twitch, you'll have noticed that I've set myself a deadline for when I want the first issue finished. It seems pretty extreme, but I want to have it done in time to get it printed for Steel City ComicCon next month! I work on it while I stream every night, so pop in to check my progress and say Hi!
