Plague Rat – Chapter 4, Page 22

Description

Panel One: Tall panel mostly filled with conversation, with Zane, Royce, DJ and Cal at the lunch table at the bottom of the panel. Zane says, "Well, I'm one of them. I think she has eight partners?" "Is that a lot?" asks Cal. "More than me, I've got six," says Royce. Zane explains, "Well, you're popular. I've got three girlfriends. That's average." DJ is sticking his tongue out and looking down at his cold soup with disappointment. DJ, aside: Bleh.

Panel Two: Cal and DJ. Cal is getting up out of his seat and reaching for DJ's bowl. DJ asks, " Wait, what? I thought you were supposed to have one?" Cal says quietly, as an aside, "I'll get you a warm bowl." "Thanks," says DJ.

Panel Three: Zane and Royce. "Not if you're just dating," Zane says. "Unless you're going steady, of course," adds Royce.

Panel Four: Open corner panel, angled shot of DJ and Cal's empty space beside him. "What about you, DJ?" they ask. DJ is holding his mug of coffee and his shoulders are slumped. He is looking sadly down and to the side, towards Cal's empty space. "I don't think I'm allowed to date," he says. "Oh."

Panel Five: Shot from behind Zane and Royce, with DJ visible between them. Royce says, "Well, I'm sure you'll be asked to dance." "Oh, yeah!" says Zane, "You and Cal both." DJ has a look of dread on his face and is clutching his mug. "The dance is coming up?!" he asks.

Author Note

Now to learn a bit about the dating culture in Yersinia!
Incidentally, this is how dating and courtship used to work for a long, long time. Until very recently, it wasn't uncommon for someone to go on dates several nights of the week, and with a different person each time. It was simply understood that everyone who was looking for a long-term relationship had multiple partners, and going on a date did not equal romantic feelings for someone. Dates were usually just a way to check initial compatibility, with the expectation that feelings could be developed or reciprocated over time.
Take a plague test if you're sniffly!
