Plague Rat – Chapter 4, Page 27

Description

Panel One: Inset panel of a plain classroom-style clock. It's 2:36 in the afternoon.

Panel Two: Wide panel of the classroom, from behind the teacher, who is standing at the lectern. He is wearing the black cloak that all doctors wear, with the red cross on the back clearly visible. The cuffs on the sleeves of his coat have bands of leather decorated with eyelets on them, same as his hatband, which also sports a silver buckle. His black gloves have a patch of ribbed embroidery on the back which resembled motorcycle gloves. In front of him are rows of two-seater desks, filled with a mix of student doctors, nurses and researcher students. The students are paying attention, taking notes, or somewhat distracted; a mix common in any classrom. At the back of the room is the teacher's desk, along with a bookcase and other classroom odds and ends. Sunlight streams in through the tall arched windows. One researcher student in the back has his hand raised and asks, "Dr. Morris, could it also be degenerative joint disease?" Their anatomy teacher, Dr. Morris, responds with, "Correct! Now, looking at the sternum..."

Panel Three: Medium shot of DJ from above, as he studiously takes notes. In front of him are two open notebooks, his textbook open to some writing and a diagram of the sternum, and a spare fountain pen. The leftmost notebook has a full page of notes, with the book diagram copied onto the next one. The right notebook is only partially full. DJ's currently filling up the first page. "He's using two notebooks at once?" Cal thinks to himself. "Is he...?"

Panel Four: Dr. Morris's head and shoulders as he labels a diagram of the sternum on the whiteboard. He is talking as he writes. "-Says "foramen," that means there's a natural hole in the bone. So, if..." Cal's thinking, "DJ's writing down everything he says!"

Panel Five: Three-quarter view, medium shot of Cal and DJ, with DJ more in the foreground. Cal is glancing over at DJ's notebook. DJ is staring straight ahead, not looking down as he writes. "He's memorized the diagram already, too," Cal realizes.

Panel Six: Shot of DJ, from roughtly Cal's POV. Light streaming in through the window behind gives DJ a soft halo, despite the intense look in the eye we can see. "My God," Cal thinks, "Dr. King wasn't kidding when she said he was the best student ever!"

Author Note

And here's why everyone says DJ's the best!

Ooof! Crowd scenes are TOUGH but worth it. Fun Fact: Dr. Morris is named/designed after the very first person to buy a copy of the comic! He was dressed as a plague doctor, and paid with gold dollar coins because he's cool like that.

Once again, big thanks to Bre7741 (https://twitter.com/bre7741) for the use of her wonderful bone diagrams! They're a great help. Go to her Twitter if you'd like to see more bones.
