Plague Rat – Chapter 3, Page 24

Description

Panel One: Side view of the three of them. From the left, we have the doctor, DJ and Cal. The doctor has relaxed his stance somewhat and moved his hands behind his back. We can now see his cloak clasp, previously hidden under the beak of his mask. It's silver, shaped like a shield and has the Yersinia Medical Academy arms on it. His cloak also has a somewhat tall mandarin collar. One eye is visible through the lens of his mask. He has pale skin, and dark brown eyes that turn down at the outside corners. Part of a medium brown eyebrow can be seen, as well. He's looking down at Cal, who stands a full head shorter than him, even with his hat. DJ, looking slightly irritated, gestures to the doctor and says, "That's all right, we were just finishing up. Cal, this is Headmaster Johannes." Cal is staring up at the Headmaster. DJ continues, "Sir, this is my new roommate, Cal."

Panel Two: Medium profile shot of Cal as he gives a very formal bow, with his right hand up by his left shoulder and his left hand behind his back. "Nice to meet you, sir," he says.

Panel Three: Low angle shot of Cal, stopped at the lowest part of his bow. He's looking confusedly at the headmaster's open, gloved hand in the foreground, which has moved in front of his face. A question mark floats by Cal's head.

Panel Four: Exreme closeup shot of the Headmaster's eyes. Only one eye is visible, and he's glaring sharply down and to the left, presumably at DJ. Light glints off the edge of the lenses. "A bow?" he says, pausing before he continues, "He's been here for five days and you still haven't taught him how to properly greet people?" From off-panel, DJ says, "Sorry, sir."

Panel Five: Same angle as the first panel. The Headmaster's arms are crossed and he's still glaring harshly at DJ. Even his mask looks like it's sneering. "I wish I could say I was surprised." DJ's looking down, his face mostly hidden by his hat. We can see him grit his teeth, and that his one hand is balled into a tight fist. The other is gripping the strap of his satchel tightly. Cal looks shocked at the Headmaster's insult towards DJ.

Panel Six: Low angle, cutout shot of the Headmaster's head and shoulders, with a small square of the stone wall behind him. He's looking down at Cal, not glaring, but not kindly, either. He looks almost bored. He's gesturing with his left hand as he explains, "Here, we shake hands. It's a very old custom, you see."

Author Note

Let's play another round of "Spot the Baddie", shall we?

Poor Cal. He didn't mean to make a mistake, he just defaulted to the most formal greeting he knows how to do!

It's like with the high-five before. He didn't know what that was. Cal's probably read about handshakes, but they're rarely described other than with words like "Hearty" or "Firm". The general vibe of a handshake is described, but never how to actually do a handshake. Imagine knowing what the words "hand" and "shake" mean, and knowing that it's a greeting, but not how one is supposed to do it. But if you know what waving is... I image he'd think it was sort of special wave people used to do.
And seriously, dude, you KNOW your new student is from the Outside, and he did the greeting he knows how to do, yet you STILL stuck your hand out to see if DJ showed him what a handshake was. How is DJ supposed to know what someone else does or does not know?

Also - "Johannes" is pronounced "Yo-Hah-Ness", if you were wondering.
